Zorin was invited to become head of the breeding department of the Sochi Experimental Station of Subtropical and Southern Fruit Crops to develop frost-resistant varieties of citrus fruits.
1904
Thanks to Fyodor Mikhailovich Zorin, the world received a unique scientific achievement of the 20th century - the Friendship Tree, an outstanding result of creativity and attention to nature.
1933
Fyodor Mikhailovich Zorin was born into the family of a village priest in Krasnoye Selo, Ryazan province. Immediately after graduating from technical school, he worked for the famous breeder Michurin.
This is how the career of the future creator of the Friendship Tree began.
Fyodor Mikhailovich thought about finding new methods
of plant breeding.
inspiration
One day, while making his daily rounds, the scientist saw a girl in a wheelchair. She was having trouble getting around the orchard and talked about how nice it would be if the whole citrus collection was on one tree.

revolution
On the wild lemon, Poncirus trifoliata, Zorin conducted experiments by grafting mandarins, lemons, grapefruits, and other citruses. Soon the wild tree began to bear fruit of completely different colours and sizes!
Everyone wanted to see
One day Otto Yulievich Schmidt, the hero of the Chelyuskin epic, visited it and became the first to give the inoculation personally. That's how the tradition began.
600 vaccinations
Since then, more than 600 graftings have been made, with visitors including royalty, artists, scientists, musicians and astronauts. Everyone became an honoured Friendship Gardener and received a diploma with a small grafting knife as a gift.

A small plaque was attached next to each graft: author's name, country, date. There are 167 countries on the Friendship Tree. By going round it, you can go round the whole world in a few minutes and meet different people.

1957
Vietnamese doctors during the visit called it
"The Friendship Tree."
They liked the idea and took it up.
That's how the wild lemon got its name.

The "smaller brothers" - trees that specialise in certain varieties - began to appear around. The bulk of grafting nowadays is done on them. The Friendship Tree itself is grafted only on special occasions.

1981
On the initiative of Lyudmila Makarovna Dmitrienko, the successor of Zorin's work, a museum was opened in the garden (architects E. I. Borkalov and A. I. Savelyev).

Its exhibits were gifts to the Friendship Tree from different countries of the world.
167 States
These are national souvenirs, letters, photos, relics, musical instruments, coins, badges, boxes with earth from memorable and historical places. In total, the museum has over 20,000 gifts from every continent
on the planet.
creator's legacy
Professor Zorin, the creator of the unicum tree, did not live to see the day when a museum would appear in the beautiful garden.

But his Friendship Tree remained, his beautiful garden remained, his poems and books remained, and of course the good memory of him remained.
I am happy to share with you the story of this wonderful place.
